My friend Fran asked me one time a long time ago, “Would you rather have ‘Hey Jude’ written about you or ‘Beautiful Boy’?”
Both songs were written about John Lennon’s children. Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” for Julian Lennon, and John wrote “Beautiful Boy” for Sean Lennon.
At the time, I said what most people would say—“Hey Jude.” Of course. But now on the other side of more of my life and on the other side of this, I think I like “Beautiful Boy” just as much.
